Franco Fabrizi (Barber). Carole André (Esmeralda the prostitute). Sergio Garfagnoli (Jasiu, Polish youth). The film's score was performed by the Orchestra dell'Accademia de Santa Cecilia, conducted by Franco Mannino, and subsequently released by EMI. In addition to the music of Gustav Mahler's Third and Fifth Symphonies which embodied the character and suffering of Aschenbach, Visconti included a number of pieces from other composers.

Orchestra e Coro dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Francesco Molinari Pradelli, Aldo Protti, Renata Tebaldi, Aldo Protti, Orchestra e Coro dell'Accadem. Adriana Lecouvreur, Act II: "Eccovi alfin, Divina!" & "Ma dunque, è vero?"

Visconti's skill in recreating lush period detail, to paint family-album poses of aristocracy, to make beauty seem dangerous, to underline the complexity of human psychology, are all in evidence here. The color photography by Pasqualino De Santis, and the costumes by Piero Tosi are excellent. The ending of the film is unforgettable: Gustav languishing on the beach, the Polish folk song in the background, the boy Tadziu in the water turning into an angelic apparition with extended hand.
