Avicii's upcoming posthumous album Tim will receive a special world premiere as a virtual reality experience, courtesy of consumer-facing VR leader Oculus. Born Tim Bergling, the 28-year-old artist took his own life in April of last year, but his music and message continue to touch fans around the world.

Virtual reality (VR) is an experience taking place within a simulation, which can be similar to or completely different from the real world. Applications of virtual reality can include entertainment and educational purposes. Other, distinct types of VR style technology include augmented reality and mixed reality.

TIM is a 12-track collection of new music, including collaborations with Chris Martin, Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons, and Aloe Blacc, whom Avicii fans will recognize as the soaring vocalist behind Wake Me Up. We’re honored to partner with Avicii Music and Geffen Records to bring the album to life through music visualization in a social VR experience. To a small degree, we are playing with that idea in this TIM virtual reality album listening experience. The opening night features a DJ set by the lady herself, as well as a room full of Vives to try out the VR experience. It sounds like a more interactive experience than the VR music videos we’ve seen so far (I enjoyed Muse’s ‘Revolt‘ on VRSE, for instance, but you can only move your head), using the Vive’s room-scale tracking to let people explore the large physical space, creating a deep connection that only could be achieved and experienced in VR.
