A Thousand Leaves is the tenth studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on May 12, 1998 by DGC Records. It was the band's first album recorded at their own studio in Lower Manhattan, which was built with the money they had made at the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. Since the band had an unlimited amount of time to work in their studio, the album features numerous lengthy and improvisational tracks that were developed unevenly.
Complete your Sonic Youth collection. Not easy to categorise it,even in the Sonic Youth discography. Rispondi Avvertimi Helpful. A Thousand Leaves" rather deals in a form of sonic beat poetry (no surprise a song is dedicated to Allen Ginsberg), long soundscapes and freely evolving structures, that might be called "jazz" if not played on electric guitars. As lyrics go, roles were by 1998 clearly defined, Kim bringing in the feminism and the politics, Lee the darker streak of experiments, while Thurston lights up the best songs (IMHO) with his words of ever-lasting teenage vitality.
Listen free to Sonic Youth – A Thousand Leaves (Contre Le Sexisme, Sunday and more). A Thousand Leaves is the twelfth album by Sonic Youth. It was the group's first major album to be recorded in their private Manhattan studio, dubbed Echo Canyon. Several references to France can be found on A Thousand Leaves. First, on the CD label the phrase "mille feuille" is crossed out and "a thousand leaves" is written under it. Mille-feuille is a French phrase that means "thousand leaves". Beginning with Washing Machine, Sonic Youth returned to more adventurous territory, and in 1997, they released a series of EPs that illustrated their bond with such post-rock groups as Tortoise and Gastr del Sol. Those EPs, as well as the epic Washing Machine closer, "The Diamond Sea," provide the foundation for A Thousand Leaves, the band's most challenging and satisfying record in years. The blasts of dissonance that characterized their SST masterworks have been replaced, by and large, by winding, intricate improvisations.
A Thousand Leaves is the 10th studio album by the American rock band Sonic Youth. It was released on May 12, 1998, by DGC Records. A Thousand Leaves was the band’s first album recorded at their own studio in Lower Manhattan, which was built with the money they had made at the 1995 Lollapalooza music festival.
Sonic Youth, meanwhile, had begun to quietly decouple themselves from the mainstream experiment a couple of years earlier. In the months approaching the release of their 14th full-length, A Thousand Leaves, Sonic Youth released a pair of instrumental EPs, hewn from early sessions for the new record. Patience is a virtue the album often demands of the listener. Sure, Washing Machine had boasted a ten-minute title track and a twenty-minute closer, the celestial ‘The Diamond Sea’, but A Thousand Leaves is wilfully leisurely, and as with everything about this most wilful album, its a quality that ultimately seduces those susceptible to its charms.
