Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (26 October 1685 – 23 July 1757) was an Italian composer who spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. Christian Zacharias is - for me - among the living pianists the most suitable to this music. He has all the required qualities as a super-class musician and actually he seems fond of playing this music, loving to polish the phrase up to its last consequences, extracting the right nuances and moods from his keyboard. If you like your Scarlatti played like Chopin and recorded like Debussy, this is just the SACD for you. But if you fancy Scarlatti in more modest attire, both in performance and recording, you are bound to be rather surprised with the approach taken by pianist Christian Zacharias and the MDG recording engineers. Mind you that in spite of current d-performance practices, I think the modern piano is perfectly suited for Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas, as demonstrated by Vladimir Horowitz, Mikhail Pletnev, Yevgeny Sudbin and Dejan Lazic.
