Brian Ritchie (born 21 November 1960) is the bass guitarist for the alternative rock band Violent Femmes. In addition to his bass playing, Ritchie is proficient at the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute. He acquired a Jun Shihan (shakuhachi teaching license) in March 2003 from James Nyoraku Schlefer, and his professional name is "Tairaku" ("big music" in Japanese).

In the case of Brian Ritchie, the release of Shakuhachi Club NYC represents much more than just another level in the small pile of solo projects this talented t has managed to finish while carrying on with his main job as bassist with the Violent Femmes. While all of the following is inevitably irrelevant to the enjoyment of Ritchie's recording, it is worth mentioning what a potentially chaotic clash of cultures the lone rock star/mystic shakuhachi player is wandering into

Brian Ritchie studied shakuhachi for seven years in New York City with James Nyoraku Schlefer. Ritchie achieved the rank of Jun Shihan (teaching license) in March of 2003. Along with the license he received the professional name Tairaku which means Big Music. Although he has been playing shakuhachi for a comparatively short period of time, Brian has already released two CD’s of shakuhachi music, Purple Field (Honkyoku) and Shakuhachi Club NYC (World Jazz). Aside from his shakuhachi activities, Brian tours and records with Violent Femmes, a band he started in 1981.

Brian Ritchie (born 21 November 1960) is the bass guitarist for the folk/punk/rock band Violent Femmes. His distinct sound comes from using Ernie Ball acoustic bass guitars, which is very uncommon in rock music. He is also one of the more high-profile users of the relatively new Barker Bass. In addition to his bass playing, Ritchie is also proficient at the shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute.

In 1987, Ritchie released his first solo album, "The Blend. In 1989, he released his second solo album, "Sonic Temple & Court of Babylon. Ritchie's third solo album, "I See A Noise," was released in 1990. All are currently out of print. Since 1998, he has collaborated with American shakuhachi maker Ken LaCosse developing a wide bore style of shakuhachi called "taimu. In 2007 Ritchie produced and toured with the Italian punk/folk band The Zen Circus, which subsequently changed its name to The Zen Circus and Brian Ritchie. The first international album of the band, Villa Inferno, was released in 2008 for the Italian record label Unhip Records. In 2008, Ritchie and his wife, Varuni Kulasekera, moved to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, where he has guested in a band called The Green Mist
