The Best of The Velvet Underground: Words and Music of Lou Reed is a compilation album by The Velvet Underground. It was released in October 1989 by Verve Records. The Best of The Velvet Underground concludes the mid-1980s re-issue series by Verve Records of their Velvet Underground material (the first three albums plus VU and Another View).
The legacy of the Velvet Underground has grown to mythic proportions as the decades wear on, and their influence continues to impact new generations of musicians. Attempting to sum up the scope of their sonic achievements proves a difficult task and a wide variety of compilations and previously unearthed recordings keep surfacing, attempting to unravel the mystery of this short-lived and impossibly cool band from New York City

Velvet Underground ~ Best Of Words & Music Of Lou Reed. This album reminds me of early Beatles as found on "Live at the BBC" and "Anthology I" - unembellished youthful enthusiasm and energy, in part fueled by alcohol and/or drugs.

The Velvet Underground in Venus in Furs, a film by Piero Heliczer, New York, November 1965. Photograph: Adam Ritchie/Redferns. The Velvet Underground matched their ambition on their debut album with Heroin, but Sister Ray, White Light/White Heat’s epic finale, catalogues each member’s musicianship, fleshing out their raw sensibilities and then stretching them out to a point of no return. With no overdubs on the production, the group revolutionised rock music through the pure onslaught of their playing. Reed’s words serve as the prelude to the song’s transcendent nature and this song revels in the energy contained by the band’s tight performance. Euphoric and hard-edged, it proved that when the Velvet Underground wanted to be less experimental, they could rock as successfully as the Byrds or anyone else across the continent.
