Bach's Greatest Hits (released as Jazz Sébastien Bach in France) is the debut album released by the Paris-based Swingle Singers. The album was a 1963 Grammy award winner for "Best Performance by a Chorus" and the group also won the 1963 Grammy award for "Best New Artist". All tracks from the album are included on the CD reissue, compilation Jazz Sebastian Bach (together with all tracks from 1968's Jazz Sébastien Bach Vol. 2) and on the 11 disk Philips boxed set Swingle Singers.

Bach: In dulci jubilo, BVW 368 (from "Four-Part Chorales", BWV 250-438) - The Swingle Singers.
The Swingle Singers are a vocal group formed in Paris in 1962 by Ward Swingle. The band consisted of eight voices (two sopranos, two altos, two tenors and two basses) with typically double bass and drums as accompaniment. The Paris version went on until 1973 when the group disbanded. Ward Swingle at this point moved to London and formed a new version of the band. This version would be more a cappella. It was originally recorded as a gift for friends. It was the success of this album which lead the way to their recording career. All the songs are from Bach. To be quite honest, the songs all kind of sound the same after awhile. But the album is what it is, a jazz vocal interpretation of Bach’s fugues. I decided to keep today’s samples in the Key of D with Bach’s Fugue in D Major (from the Well Tempered Clavier 1st Book) and Fugue in D Minor (from the Art of the Fugue).
The Swingle Singers started out by attempting to sing Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. The "doo-be-doo" style of singing together with the bass and drums accompaniment may have the more purist music-lover reaching for the stop button-it certainly did back in the 1960s-but the Swingles' performances are impeccable. This is NOT the title or album cover of the LP issued in the US, but IS the same recording as the "Bach's Greatest Hits" LP released here in 1963 (or 1964) with the white album cover and grey line drawings of Bach et al. It is just as I remebered it. What a nice memory.
