The album closes with a reprise of "Brazil," restating a theme that has, surprisingly been touched upon in every track since the original inception, making most of the disc a suite that is a lush, sense-altering mediation, not only on Jobim 's music and the portraits it paints, but ON the sounds employed by Taylor to achieve this effect. Stone Flower is simply brilliant, a velvety, late-night snapshot of Jobim at his peak.

It's so easy
i will let you know that bossa nova is one of a handful of things i'm not an expert in. but, i'm not ignorant either.i looked into this record after seeing one of his compositions on trent reznor's lost highway (it was a lynch movie) soundtrack. that track [and the soundtrack in general] blew my socks off, so i thought i'd check out some of his recordings. after much research, i decided to grab this one. i will relate to you the factors that led me to this record and why i don't regret it.antonio carlos jobim is apparently known in north america as being the guy that invented bossa nova. let's not get into whether that's accurate or not, the perception is still widespread; he's dead now, but that's not the point. bossa nova was a style of particularly sensual jazz that hit it big in the early to mid 60s that became associated with bond girls, hugh hefner and marijuana. well, maybe that's a bit overly ridiculous, but if it wasn't true at the time, it might as well be now. stone flower indeed.....i'll even admit reading this the first time as stoned flower (child). that must be chronic he's smoking, he looks about ready to cough his ass off.but, this record is supposed to be his most sophisticated release. it's the most developed in his back catalogue, his only real attempt at something serious. this was pop music in the 60s, and i don't mean pop in the sense the beatles were pop, i mean pop in the sense that paris hilton is pop; bossa nova was certainly a lot less vacuous than a britney record is today, but you need to get into the right mindset, man, and that's the right mindset. well, maybe britney is a bit much, but mariah carey or celine dion is not.yet, the record is solid, i'm telling you. it's really light, but it grooves and it's tight. the orchestration is sparse but nice - this is real music; while it's not the only good thing he did (the initial track which captivated me is not on this), apparently not all of his back catalogue is even close to this level of quality. the result is that this is universally acknowledged as the bossa nova record to own, if you choose to own any at all, and i would suggest that you choose to own one......this one.so, i mean, don't buy this looking for an iron maiden record, even if iron maiden and stone flower share something in common. buy it for the chill out factor, light a reef, and chill out....and bring a romantic interest along with you :)

Essential album from one of the most influential music writer, composer, singer, arranger, musician of the whole music history. After 38 years still sounds fantastic. This in particular is the best work beside "Terra Brasilis" and "Wave". All tracks are absolutely masterpieces, "Tereza My Love" the opening theme is a beautiful slow bossa nova track, very emotional song, "Brazil" needs no explanation, classic brazilian tune, "Amparo" is my favourite, it was used in the movie "The Adventures" the arrangement of the piano reminds me some works from Debussy. The title track "Stone Flower" shows a typical atmosphere of brazilian music style, vibrant rhythms and perfect arrangement like many Jobim's tracks. Antonio Carlos Jobim is aknowledged as the creator and innovator of bossa nova style and this amazing album is the proof.
