The Greeting is a 1978 live album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, his thirteenth release on the Milestone label. It was recorded in March 1978 at the Great American Music Hall and features performances by Tyner with a sextet featuring George Adams, Joe Ford, Charles Fambrough, Woody "Sonship" Theus and Guilherme Franco and a solo performance of John Coltrane's "Naima".

One of the better McCoy Tyner records on Milestone, this live set from San Francisco features the masterful pianist playing solo on "Naima" and leading a strong sextet (with George Adams on tenor, flute, and soprano; Joe Ford on alto and flute; bassist Charles Fambrough; drummer Woody "Sonship" Theus; and percussionist Guilherme Franco) on four of his originals. There are remakes (quite different from the originals) of "Fly with the Wind" and "The Greeting" and two newer pieces, including the atmospheric "Hand in Hand.

On the note of writing being a strength of Tyner’s music, if one cannot be moved by themes like Fly with The Wind or The Greeting then there is probably no hope for ever appreciating Tyner. The writing is where the whole Tyner sound begins and sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s epic themes followed by solos that attempt to soar into the stratosphere. The Coltrane quartet wrote the book on this, and McCoy Tyner spent a good part of his career thereafter in dialogue with what had already been said.
