The Last Waltz is the soundtrack to the 1978 film The Last Waltz documenting the "farewell" concert of the classic line-up of Canadian-American rock group The Band which took place at Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976. The concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood and Neil Young.

But as an album, The Last Waltz soundtrack had to compete with the Band's earlier live album, Rock of Ages, with which it bears a certain superficial resemblance - both found the group trying to create something grander than the standard-issue live double, and both featured the group beefed up by additional musicians
In the mid-Seventies, the Band cut an album of oldies (1973’s Moondog Matinee); reunited with Dylan for the Planet Waves (1974) album and tour (which resulted in the live album Before the Flood ); recorded the best of their later albums (1975’s Northern Lights, Southern Cross); and then took their leave in 1976. The Band will release four reissues of 'The Last Waltz' in celebration of the project's 40th anniversary in 2016. 11 - showcases the Band's Thanksgiving Day 1976 concert at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco. Called "The Last Waltz," the show was the final concert to feature the group's original five-man lineup of Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson. They were joined by an all-star cast including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison and Neil Young, among others.
