With poetic lyrics, a narrative album structure, and a penchant for antique sounds, Easterween sounds like what would happen if you added a Greek chorus to a film set during the turn of the last century - Chris Dart, The Torontoist torontoist. Records like Easterween (and admittedly, there is nothing like Easterween) are what push boundaries and keep musicians progressing.

EASTERWEEN was performed March 13th 2018 in a 19th century Italian-styled opera house in Montbeliard, France. A rare instance where the spirit of the music aligned with the spirit of the venue. Thanks to arranger/cellist Andrew Downing, projectionist Yesim Tosuner, the Victor Hugo Orchestra and MA Scene Nationale. Photo by Betty Andrey.

Andrew Downing and John Southworth present a live show based on their new album, Easterween, tonight and tomorrow at the Lower Ossington Theatre (Emma Lee photo). Pop people call it a concept album, where a common thread runs through a series of songs. The classical world calls it a song cycle. But I think the most appropriate description for Easterween, a collaboration between singer-singwriter John Southworth and string player Andrew Downing, is Gothic Musical Monologues.
