GILA falls somewhere between the two. "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" was released in 1973. The biggest problem that I had with the album, at first, was that it sounded too psychedelic, and thus dated, for a 1973 release. The music seemed to have more in common with early AMON DL II than what was going on with rock music at the time. Conny Veit reformed the band GILA with two members of Popol Vuh and released this album in 1973. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee' is astonishing, very different to the forerunner. The album consists of music which is oriented at american psych and folk but sounds unique nevertheless, a concept album with a story about the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890 where the indian natives suffered a heavy defeat. I don't know if another german band ever tried to work out such a theme in this way - very curageous and GILA is successful though.

Recorded in Stommeln at Studio Dierks 1973.

Whereas the first record was psychedelic space rock acid jams, on their second album, Gila, now consisting of mostly Popol Vuh members, offered something far more sedate. Though Conny Veit was always the leader of Gila, this one comes off much more like a solo effort. The record is a concept album inspired by the book of the same name by Dee Alexander Brown that brought the plight of the North American Indians to international attention. Complex multi-tracked acoustic guitar melodies create a shimmering, even haunting beauty in a lushly Baroque setting, while some of the lyrics are taken from.

2 Bury my heart at Wounded Knee. Historian Dee Brown, in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, mentions an estimate of 300 of the original 350 having been killed or wounded and that the soldiers loaded 51 survivors (4 men and 47 women and children) onto wagons and took them to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Army casualties numbered 25 dead and 39 wounded. In 1992, Beverly (Buffy) Sainte-Marie released her song entitled "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", on her Coincidence and Likely Stories album. Artists who have written or recorded songs referring to the battle at Wounded Knee include: Walela "Wounded Knee" from their 1997 self-titled album.

Shop with confidence. Book itself in pretty good condition.

Format: Audio CD. 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee' ('73) was Gila's second and final studio effort, as it differs quite a bit from their self-titled 1971 debut lp. Less psychedelic space rock and MORE of just a good progressive release, I think. Noticed that several members of Popol Vuh had joined up with Connie Veit for the making of this record.
