The Specials is the debut album by British ska revival band The Specials. Released on 19 October 1979 on Jerry Dammers' 2 Tone label, the album is seen by some as the defining moment in the UK ska scene. Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the disaffection and anger felt by the youth of the UK's "concrete jungle"-a phrase borrowed from Bob Marley's 1972 album Catch a Fire but equally apposite used here to describe the grim, violent inner cities of 1970s Britain.
The Specials, also known as The Special AKA, are an English 2 Tone and ska revival band formed in 1977 in Coventry. After some early changes, the first stable lineup of the group consisted of Terry Hall and Neville Staple on vocals, Lynval Golding and Roddy Radiation on guitars, Horace Panter on bass, Jerry Dammers on keyboards, John Bradbury on drums, and Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez on horns. Their music combines a "danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude".

Great album, why the haters below? They've no idea! They started with Man at C&A at Kentish Town a couple of week back, Awesome night. We just don't have any decent music now just silly little girls like Miley the virus, Taylor and Rihanna and co no decent Blokie groups. Don't even get me started on 1direction. Comedy and music highjacked by the middle class upwards and that's why it's crap. Philippe FRAPPIER6 tháng trước. Just so good i remember in bringthon 19780. What’s more, The Specials’ combination of pre-reggae sounds with punk attitude was also a decidely non-Londoncentric movement. Two Tone (as it quickly came to be known, named for the band’s label) was born on the streets of the West Midlands. And even though it also gave rise to the Camden nutty boys, Madness, it was bands like the Beat and Selector who had really seen the effects of mass unemployment and civil unrest on their neighbourhoods.
But then, In the Studio was helmed by Jerry Dammers, the architect of the Specials and the 2-Tone movement. A version of the Valentines’ 1967 single Blam Blam Fever – already covered by the ersatz Specials on the largely forgotten 2000 album Skinhead Girl – is the kind of dive into the ska archives that formed the basis of the band’s early repertoire. You can understand the logic behind adding The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (the debut single by Hall and Golding’s post-Specials band the Fun Boy Three) to their repertoire, but it feels strangely restrained and polite recast as a kind of dub tango.
A version of Rude Buoys Outa Jail – taken from a bonus 7 that came with early copies of the LP – mixes Dammers’ boogie-woogie piano with Neville Staple’s extended toasting (although this package curiously omits its flipside, Braggin’ And Tryin’ Not To Lie, a track that Roddy describes as the birth of ska-billy ). With the second album our lives had changed so completely, International Jet Set was still autobiographical but I was aware the public probably wouldn’t be able to relate so easily. Stereotype and Pearls Café were more or less invented characters with elements of different real people. How much collaboration was there when it came to the writing and arranging?
British Ska-Punk Legends the Specials Return in Top Form on ‘Encore’. On this iteration, their numbers have been winnowed significantly: r Dammers and singer Neville Staple are out of the picture; drummer John Bradbury and trombonist Rico Rodriguez died within months of each other in 2015. But with signpost singers Terry Hall and Lynval Golding in place, and Horace Panter holding down the bass lines, the classic sound is fairly intact, as is the spirit. The latter seems more to the point, as the set opens with stylistic curveballs
