Jay-Z's first solo album since 2009's The Blueprint 3, released initially on Samsung mobile devices, finds him working with marquee names including Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, and Na. And just as the brutal and blasphemous Yeezus is true to its title, Magna Cart. oly Grail offers a jumbled juxtaposition of the regal and divine- hear Jay-Z gasp You in the presence of a king/ Scratch that, you in the presence of a god on Crown. It's one of the few lines here that scans as wishful thinking. The album is a celebration of unlimited financial privilege and power that even used its literally game-changing release as a Samsung Galaxy app to separate Jay-Z’s fans into haves and have-nots
So is ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ a piece of transcendental musical brilliance? Erm, not really. Of the 14 tracks (bulked out by two 50-second musical interludes), a couple are excellent, seven are decent, four are yawny in the extreme and one sounds like it was rescued from the studio bin while they were creating the ‘Great Gatsby’ soundtrack. And on the acoustica-strafed, string-laden paean to fatherhood that is ‘Jay Z Blue’ we get the snigger-inducing rhyme of: ‘Baby need Pampers/Daddy need at least three weeks in the Hamptons’. Essentially, it’s business as usual: another competent effort from a once-stunning MC who hasn’t produced anything breathtaking since midway through last century.
And so we have Magna Carta Holy Grail, which doesn't see Jay limiting himself so much as it does him looking around at the existing restrictions of and encroachments on his power at the top. That's not to say there aren't any grand statements about how rich or talented (or even God-like) he is-after Watch The Throne, there's really no going back from that lyrical vein, at least not completely-but in comparison to WTT, this album sees him looking around at the empire he's built and feeling around the edges a. bit more, testing where the extent of his influence lies
Holy Grail with force, reintroducing JAY Z like he never left. Though the release of Magna Cart. oly Grail seemed somewhat spontaneous, its opening track and the Frank Ocean–highlighted Oceans were started two years before its 2013 release, showing Hov's skills as a tactician. Songs like Jay Z Blue (an ode to his daughter) and Part II (On the Run) (a continued tale of love with wife Beyoncé) show a more mature artist. And songs like Tom Ford and Picasso Baby bring a jolt of new energy that gives the album a signature bounce.
