Beefheart eventually formed a new Magic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained contemporary approval through three final albums: Shiny Beast (1978), Doc at the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). Van Vliet made few public appearances after his retirement from music in 1982. 6 Doc at the Radar Station. 7 Ice Cream for Crow. 8 Riding Some Kind of Unusual Skull Sleigh. The album was released in September 1967. Among those who took notice were the Beatles.

Ice Cream for Crow is the twelfth studio album by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, released in September 1982. It is the last Don Van Vliet recorded before abruptly retiring from music to devote himself to a career as a painter.

Many of the songs on Doc either reworked or fully developed unused material composed around the time of the creatively fertile Trout Mask sessions, which adds to the spirited performances. Even if the Captain's voice isn't quite what it once was, Doc at the Radar Station is an excellent, focused consolidation of Beefheart's past and then-present.

Captain beefheart/captain beefheart & the magic band - doc at the radar station. This album, the penultimate studio album from the great Captain features an angular sound, somewhat similar to what Snakefinger was creating at around the same time, but with Beefheart's unique style of poetic lyricism. The songs, as odd sounding as they are, get an amazing performance from the band, which includes long time Zappa trombonist, Bruce Fowler, the great John French and Gary Lucas, and Snakefinger sideman to be Eric Drew Feldman.

Combining elements of free jazz, blues and rock, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band produced what is commonly regarded by critics and fans as one of rock’s few truly original bodies of work. Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) retired from the music industry after 1982’s Ice Cream For Crow album to concentrate on his primary love – paint. The Radar Station is a purely fan-run site which aims to document every twist and turn in the tale of this unique individual. Don Van Vliet: 1941-2010 – tributes and fond farewells

Doc at the Radar Station is the eleventh studio album by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, released in August 1980 to critical acclaim. Although about half of the album's songs are based on old musical ideas, Mike Barnes states that "most of the revamping work built on skeletal ideas and fragments. would have mouldered away in the vaults had they not been exhumed and transformed into full-blown, totally convincing new material".

Album · 1979 · 12 Songs. Weird Mellotron snippets and gosling saxophone bleats fling color across conflicting rhythms and clashing textures
