Aretha Franklin wasn’t a stranger to the recording studio when she entered Columbia’s hallowed 30th Street Studios in 1960, having already committed to vinyl an album of religious selections produced in 1956 at the church of her father, Reverend . For her debut album, Aretha (with The Ray Bryant Combo), Hammond followed the formula he once prescribed for his discovery Billie Holiday: standards and blues with a jazz rhythm section plus horns and head charts. Aretha also delivers sympathetic performances of Van McCoy’s Remember Me and Follow Your Heart, and the most Atlantic-like of the sides, Ashford and Simpson’s Cry Like a Baby. Take a Look: Aretha Franklin on Columbia makes a powerful case for its tracks to be considered an integral part of one of the most remarkable bodies of American music.
The Electrifying Aretha Franklin (1962) presented the artist as torch singer/chanteuse (albeit a very earthy one), fully orchestrated with strings and orchestra. Her singing is excellent always, even if the setting is not. This is possibly because any discussion of this material must be made retrospectively, through a lens dominated by Franklin's Atlantic material. CD9: A Bit of Soul: Follow Your Heart; Only The One You Love; One Step Ahead; Can't You Just See Me; How To Murder Your Wife; A Little Bit Of Soul; Cry Like A Baby; Her Little Heart Went To Loveland; Remember Me;Land Of Dreams; Little Miss Raggedy Ann. Bonus Tracks: Deeper; I Still Can't Forget; Rose Of Washington Square. Mono Mixes: Take It Like You Give It; Follow Your Heart; Only The One You Love; One Step Ahead; How To Murder Your Wife; A Little Bit Of Soul; Cry Like A Baby; Her Little Heart Went To Loveland.
A Bit of Soul (the full album as it was compiled in 1965, but never released), The Queen In Waiting (includes Aretha’s last Columbia recordings produced by Bob Johnston, noted for his work during this period with Bob Dylan; and songs that Columbia sweetened with new musicians after Aretha left the label). A bonus DVD, Aretha ’64! Live on The Steve Allen Show, features Aretha singing and playing piano on the legendary comedian’s television program in the spring of 1964.
Take A Look was compiled and produced by Grammy Award-nominated producer Leo Sacks, who has supervised more than 300 compilations, remixes and new recordings for Legacy which have been vital to preserving the works of such. Indeed, it's often been said that Aretha could take 'happy birthday' and turn it into a veritable opus and while those who know her will testify to her culinary skills in the kitchen, it is her mastery as a musical chef that is evident on each and every one of those forty-plus albums, many of which have achieved gold and platinum.
