The term American folk music encompasses numerous music genres, variously known as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music, or roots music. Many traditional songs have been sung within the same family or folk group for generations, and sometimes trace back to such origins as Great Britain, Europe, or Africa all the music that fits between the cracks.

Just don't mistake John Jacob Niles as the roots of anything, unless it's the Monty Python school of Americana.

There is more to the roots of Americana than just folk and blues (gospel, for one, ought to be considered, and even jazz as well), but that quibble aside, this strange little compilation is chock-full of oddities, and if it doesn't necessarily support the claims of its title, any set that attempts to place Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins and the weirdly. quaint John Jacob Niles in the same inclusive box has to be at least interesting

Paradise and Lunch is the fourth album by roots rock musician Ry Cooder, released on June 8, 1974 on Reprise Records. The album is composed of cover versions of jazz, blues and roots standards and obscurities recorded at the Warner Brothers Studios. The final track, Ditty Wah Ditty, showcases a duet between Cooder and jazz pianist Earl Fatha Hines. It was produced by Russ Titelman and Lenny Waronker. The album reached on the Billboard 200. The album also includes Cooder’s updated arrangement of bluesman Washington Phillips’ The Tattler that stands out for its guitar playing.

Here are the best albums in the country and Americana worlds from the year’s first six months. The resulting album, Rifles & Rosary Beads, is not only one of the most arresting American singer-songwriter records in recent years, but one of the most vital pieces of art to come out of those two wars. With gut-punch narratives like Iraq and Bullet Holes in the Sky, Rifles is a bar-raising statement of harrowed trauma, broken faith and, ultimately, communal strength. And by sharing her platform with the voices of veterans, Gauthier’s album also serves as a necessary lesson in the power of country-folk storytelling and its ability to provide a voice for the voiceless.

An interesting and varied set of folk recordings originally done for Diane Hamilton and Patrick Clancy's "Tradition Records" between 1955 and 1961, "Folk Roots: The Sound of Americana" may not exactly live up to its title but it does feature some striking recordings, most notably Odetta's powerful version of "Chilly Winds," Etta Baker's spry guitar instrumental take on "Goin' Down Allen Ginsberg, William Blake ‎– Songs Of Innocence And Experience (1970) Bhundu Boys - Shabini (1986).
