It is Mastodon's first concept album, loosely based on the 1851 novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The songs "Iron Tusk", "Blood and Thunder", "I Am Ahab" and "Seabeast" were released as singles. Three magazines awarded the album Album of the Year in 2004: Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer. In 2009 and 2015 MetalSucks named Leviathan the best metal album of the 21st century.

Album Name Leviathan. Released date 31 August 2004. Labels Relapse Records. Leviathan’ took ‘Remission’’s powerful metal stomp, injected it with the progressive elements and just plain weird moments that turned them from respected underground band into mainstream gods, and left critics and fans reeling. How could it ever be followed? Well ‘Blood Mountain’ made a commendable attempt, and to be honest was a contender for album of 2006 in my estimation, but I felt never quite reached the same level that ‘Leviathan’ did.

Where to begin" Mastodon have shattered expectations for 21st century metal and emerged as one of the premier bands in the genre. With the exception of System of a Down, Opeth and Tool, almost no other band has offered such a unique take on the art and emerged with both critical and commercial success.

Album · 2004 · 10 Songs. Mastodon's punishing second album doubles as a concept LP inspired by Herman Melville's allegorical novel Moby-Dick. As it turns out, Ahab's single-minded fixation with killing the white whale is perfect fodder for the band's relentless sonic barrage. Guttural vocal growls and shape-shifting drums provide the backbone for slabs of grinding fret calisthenics ("Blood and Thunder"), sludgy metal ("Iron Tusk"), and lilting prog ("Seabeast").

Mastodon find their niche as a thinking man's metal band. Blending Voivod's neuro-thrash, Therion's majestic gloom, Morbid Angel's spirit of restless and morphing liquid black melody, and EyeHateGod's Southern rock gone awry, Leviathan is nothing short of supernatural. Mastodon find their niche as a thinking man's metal band.

On Leviathan, Mastodon infused their hardcore roots with more metal and more prog; it’s the album on which Mastodon became Mastodon. Leviathan is unrelenting. The artful yet raw riffs continue to pummel from song to song, yet somehow never sacrifice dynamic for brutality. With tracks like Iron Tusk and Heart Alive the band dabbled in the progginess and delicate metal soundscapes that would come to define their later work

At one fateful point during the time when Atlanta's Mastodon were gathering ideas for what would become their 2004 breakthrough album, Leviathan, drummer Brann Dailor found himself on a hellish 30-hour plane trip with nothing to pass the time except a copy of Moby-Dick.
