Who, who, who, who?) I really want to know (Who are you? . Who Are You was written about meeting Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols after an awful 13-hour encounter with Allan Klein who, in my personal opinion, is the awesome rock leech-godfather. In one sense the song is more about the demands of new friendship than blood-letting challenge. Roger’s aggressive reading of my nihilistic lyric redirected its function by the simple act of singing Who the fuck are you. when I had written Who, who, who are you. Steve and Paul became real ‘mates’ of mine in the English sense. We socialized a few times.
The documentary The Kids Are Alright shows The Who in a studio recording this song. John, Keith, and Pete do the clapping part, but John comes in early, which leads the rest of the group to laugh hysterically. John also amuses Keith by twirling his hands between claps.

Who Are You is an LP the Who have been working toward all through the Seventies. The fears of aging, irrelevancy and the dissolution of one’s self, one’s band or one’s audience that peeked out of Who’s Next and The Who by Numbers have finally surfaced whole. Keith Moon, unstable, unreliable, sits in a chair. marked Not to Be Taken Away. It will be a real disappointment if another three years pass before the next Who album: this one seems to have left them ready for the new music they claim they can’t make - a claim that’s obviated by what is new and, more importantly, compelling on Who Are You. I said this was, despite its claims to oblivion, a confident record: what makes it so is the Who’s refusal to settle for mere survival, for automatic applause and meaningless pro forma hits.
The Who have been with several labels over the years. In the United Kingdom and elsewhere outside North America, they were signed originally to Brunswick Records. In 1966, they moved to Polydor Records and took the rights to their Brunswick recordings with them. They created and moved to Track Records the following year with distribution by Polydor. They left Track in 1974 and returned to Polydor directly, remaining with the label ever since.

Who Are You was released in the UK on 18 August 1978 (Polydor 2490 147 WHOD 5004) where it reached as a CD in the 1980s (Polydor 831 557-2), and as a remixed and remastered CD (Polydor 533 845-2) in 1996. It was re-issued on vinyl in 2012. It was released simultaneously in the US (MCA 3050) where it reached and in the 1980s as a CD (MCA MCAD-37003) and a Gold Disc (MFSL UDCD 561 before a remixed and remastered CD (MCA MCAD-11492) was issued in 1996. Keith Moon’s unfortunate death on 7 September 1978, completely overshadowed the release of Who Are You. Ironically, he is photographed on the cover sitting on a chair with the words Not To Be Taken Away emblazoned on its back. Bonus tracks on 1996 remastered CD.
