The advantage Pete Townshend has over many of his contemporaries is he's found nonmusical outlets for his creative urges. Engaged in publishing in his post-Who semi-retirement, the windmilling guitarist has returned to the stage infrequently, which may partially explain the energy he brings to this performance, a benefit for a treatment center for abused children

Pete Townshend Live: A Benefit for Maryville Academy captures a charity concert Townshend gave at the Chicago House of Blues on August 16, 1998. It was the second in a series of annual concerts to raise money for the children's organization, and Townshend clearly relishes the event, if the quality of the performance is any indication. He pretty much concentrates on classics, from "Magic Bus" to "Let My Love Open the Door," but he gives spirited performances.
