Pete Townshend attempted another concept album with 'White City: A Novel,' which also arrived with a film made from the same themes. On the surface, he was telling the autobiographical story of his upbringing in the titular West London borough, but those details were really just the connective tissue for a song cycle that tried to tackle everything from gender roles to racism. Originally I was going to call it The Tragedy of the Boy," Townshend told Spin.

Built around a loose narrative concerning urban despair, the album doesn't work very well conceptually, yet a handful of the individual songs are among his finest solo work, including the punchy "Face the Face" and the anthemic "Give Blood.
In White City Fighting, Pete remembers his violent past, sounding just a bit wistful for his days as a rough boy. Yet he seems to have finally found comfort in maturity, and that feeling warms and informs White City. As far as I'm concerned, "White City" is far and away the best solo album ever recorded by Pete Townshend. The mesmerizing and down-in-the-mouth "Give Blood" opens the album with a vengeance. Despite the despair of the lyrics, Townshend ratchets things up to a major chord at the last minute-and it makes perfect sense
