Jos van Immerseel was born in Antwerp in 1945 and attended the Antwerp Conservatory, where he was awarded first prizes for his virtuosity on three keyboard instruments: piano, organ, and harpsichord. He continued his studies with the Canadian harpsichordist Kenneth Gilbert, who urged him to specialize in that instrument, which complemented Immerseel's already more than casual - interest in older music. He had also honed this aspect of his art as conductor of the Antwerp Collegium Musicum and the Alma Musica. At the Conservatory, Immerseel began composing and writing articles on music and. Immerseel now carries on the tradition of the harpsichord as a teacher at the Conservatory.

Jos Van Immerseel (born 9 November 1945) is a Belgian harpsichordist, pianist and conductor. Van Immerseel studied organ, piano and harpsichord at the Antwerp Conservatory under Flor Peeters, Eugène Traey and harpsichordist and musicologist Kenneth Gilbert. He created the Collegium Musicum there, developing his interest in Renaissance and Baroque music, later expanding his activities to include the Classical and early Romantic eras.

Jos van Immerseel performs on three historic Antwerp harpsichords from the Vleehuis museum: Andreas Ruckers the Elder (1644), Joannes Daniel Dulcken (1747), Joannes Couchet (1650). Each of the three mini-recitals is well formed and very satisfying on its own terms. Immerseel plays with great care, which comes across as being absorbed in the music rather than reserved or pedantic about it. Highlights include a set of variations on the famous "Folia" melody, and a very moving piece, the longest on the disc, by Armand-Louis Couperin (cuisin of the well known Francois "Le Grand").

Jos Van Immerseel Plays Historic Flemish Harpsichords: Works of Mozart, Balbastre, Sweelinck, Bull, Bach and others (Odyssey Y 34632). For the two centuries during which the harpsichord flourished, Antwerp was a key center for the manufacture of the instrument and it is now the site of a museum housing some notable specimens. Three of these, as much as the music, form this record's chief point of interest; each of the three is displayed in music of appropriate vintage (including one that is actually a virginal), and the music is well played and recorded. Music of Jacques Duphly

A harpsichordist is a person who plays the harpsichord. Many baroque composers played the harpsichord, including Johann Sebastian Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, George Frideric Handel, François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau. At this time, it was common for such musicians also to play the organ, and all keyboard instruments, and to direct orchestral music while playing continuo on the instrument.
