Req resurfaced on the left-leaning Warp after two LPs recorded for big beat boutique Skint, and the results put to shame any notions of underground rap practiced by Rawkus or Def Jux. Though his sub-basement sound aesthetic won't win him any crossover converts, Sketchbook makes a good listen out of downtempo beatbox musings, similar to DJ Vadim's earliest work.
Label: Warp Records – WARP CD 89. Format: CD, Album, Digipak. Not into big beat, but this is minimal breaks, very proggy like Krautrock. smoking album all and all especially for head phone listening. Lights, track 5, seems to be written from strictly samples of a wind up jack-in-the-box but like others the samples sound like they're sourced from a million miles away.
Req also gets serious mileage out of a lone repeating loop, and he shows a similar affinity for a rough and ragged analog sound laced with simple melodic motifs. There's a spirited rawness to Sketchbook that's both disarming and immediately engaging; though elements feel familiar, the tone here is striking and unconventional. Hip-hop is an obvious touchstone, but even the most minimal hip-hop production feels thick and cluttered next to Req's naked approach

by Didz Hammond March 27th, 2002. There are two points to consider when listening to this album. a) Req is infamous for two things. His unconventional and pioneering approach to spray can art and very average hip-hop production. b) Hip-hop is one of the only genres in which the experiments of the underground don’t coax the mainstream to catch up.
