The last time Beck truly cut loose was maybe 2006's The Information, which was lighter than either the coiled 2008 LP Modern Guilt or the slow, sepia-toned Morning Phase, which took home the Album of the Year Grammy in 2015.

Colors' was recorded at Greg Kurstin's Los Angeles studio with Beck and Kurstin playing nearly every instrument themselves between 2013 and 2017. I was touring constantly while making it, so I was attempting to bring some of that energy back to the studio, which isn’t always the easiest thing to do. ‘Dreams’ was one of the early songs to come along and make me think the idea had legs.

Kinda feel like the highs are a bit distorted and certain songs lack clarity and definition. I feel like the mastering isn't as clean as it could be. Some songs sound exceptional like "Dreams" and "wow" which carry more warmth and have a nicer low end. I know this an electronic record, so I'm curious to know how it was mastered but some parts sound muddied. There are parts where vocals, drums, bass and whatever electronic instruments swirl together and kind of get distorted. I have a decent set up but I wonder if it's my speakers that cannot produce some of the odd frequencies used in production. Either way, It's a $20 record, can't go wrong, the sound is decent enough to enjoy the spin.

Can't really say. The white version really isn't all that bad, the muddiness occurs only on a couple of songs on side A and doesn't take away too badly from the overall quality. I think it has to do with some very low electronic bass tones that my speakers can't handle easily. Other than that the album sounds great. Never hurts going with the 2LP version but you won't really notice an improvement on sonics unless your system is on the high end side and can handle the frequency and range of some of the sounds on this record. Curious to know myself how the 2LP compares.

Thanks for the review. Looking into buying this one or the 2xLP more expensive version. You reckon that has better sound quality? Anyone?
