Steve Gunn (born in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, United States) is an American, Brooklyn-based, singer-songwriter. Gunn was formerly a guitarist in Kurt Vile's backing band, The Violators. Gunn has stated that his musical influences include Michael Chapman, La Monte Young, Indian music, John Fahey, Jack Rose, Robbie Basho, and Sandy Bull. Boerum Palace (2009). The first impression of Steve Gunn’s formal long-player debut is of a slight but varied trek through various current popular guitar modes. It has only six songs and doesn’t even break the 30-minute mark. His three experiments with songwriting come off well, but his singing is modest and his lyrics, while earnest and concise, seem a little too straightforward. This nostalgia isn’t about escape. Of course, Sundowner isn’t necessarily about these things. That the six pieces here can almost carry the weight of this interpretation is a tribute to Gunn’s craft.

Morlunn

Without breaking his stride, or even the thirty minute mark, Steve Gunn seems intent to roam through a variety of contemporary (2008) guitar themes and structures. Nearly everything presented is modest on this adventure, both his singing and lyrics, not to mention his guitar playing, playing that while straightforward and earnest, manages to come across as being vaguely familiar.Of course I could have just as easily imply that Sundowner is slow to reveal itself, that it’s very nature lies in it’s subtle depth, emotional details and the rather open ended ideas he’s profoundly exploring. The album is filled with melancholy, though it’s not evident if this is an emotional melancholy or something profoundly inherent, along with a sense that times passed where a better and more fortunate place to have lived … where to this end he seems dead set on creating an older sound for his new music.*** The Fun Facts: Sundowner refers to a person with dementia who becomes increasingly irritable or difficult as the day moves on.
