Solens arc is kangding ray’s fourth album on raster-noton and the follow-up to "the pentaki slopes" ep. The twelve tracks of this record are assembled in the form of four "arcs", one for each side of the double LP. The different sequences are arranged seamlessly into dense, evolving compositions, while keeping their autonomy, and their role in the global dramaturgy. Pointillist serial loops and disintegrated melodic textures morph into abrasive rave anthems, broken club rhythms are refitted into uneven patterns, like deconstructivist sound architectures
Kangding Ray - Solens Arc When David Letellier, AKA Kangding Ray, released his first album, Stabil, you could hardly have guessed he would later make something like Solens Arc. With its keenly fashioned melodies and crackling percussion, Stabil made sense on Raster-Noton, but it was also surprisingly soothing for such a severe label. Since then, Letellier's moved closer to the German outfit's greyscale palette, albeit with enough melody left to mark out his own identity
As Kangding Ray, David Letellier has steadily grown in stature and accomplishment over the last eight years, and his fourth album, Solens Arc, continues this progress in cinematic style. Half billowing noise, half rolling Germanic techno, it’s a dramatic, black and white sound in high contrast. The album particularly develops some of the textures found in more recent EPs, now sharing characteristics with Shelley Parker, Peder Mannerfelt and Emptyset. Snarling, paper-ish noise flutters at tracks’ edges. Long, gritty phrases get thrown out as slow boomerangs.
Solens Arc is Kangding Ray’s forth album on raster and the follow-up to The Pentaki Slopes EP. The different sequences are arranged seamlessly into dense, evolving compositions, while keeping their autonomy and role in the global dramaturgy. Pointillist serial loops and disintegrated melodic textures morph into abrasive rave anthems, broken club rhythms are refitted into uneven patterns, like deconstructivist sound architectures.
Solens Arc conveys itself in a similar manner. A tangible feeling of uncertainty and fear pervades the albums runtime, and this invokes surprisingly vivid imagery for such a relaxed music style. It’s like you can’t quite see into the darkest street corners, or the creatures lurking just deep enough to avoid sighting. David Letellier manages to maintain this atmosphere from start to finish, and this suspension of tension allows Solens Arc to stand out as unique and engaging. The second arc is far simpler, with fewer ideas floating around and a greater commitment to fleshing them out. ‘Blank Empire’ follows a similar pattern to the third track, but has interludes on both sides to help ease the listener in and out of the centrepiece. This makes it a more singularly satisfying experience than the songs prior, but there’s just not enough substance here to warrant a twelve minute arc.
In this interview Kangding Ray goes into detail about his new album Solens Arc, discussing how his musical landscape has developed since the success of his previous album OR and how his new album is a direct reflection of functionality. You’re from France, why did you move to Berlin? I moved here in 2001 to finish my studies. I was studying architecture in France and finished in Berlin. I didn’t know the city but I instantly liked it, and decided to stay
