Alva Noto - Unieqav Carsten Nicolai's Uni album series was initially inspired by a live show at the Tokyo nightclub Unit, where he decided to adjust his material for the dance floor. The first two LPs, Unitxt and Univrs, took Nicolai's clinical sound as Alva Noto and made it spontaneous and combustible. Back in 2008, noted experimentalist Alva Noto began a sporadic series of albums that were far more focused on dancefloor-inspired rhythms than his usual eccentric and inspiring fare. Unieqav is the third and, we're told, final part of the series. The album is apparently meant to be a sonic representation of an underwater dive, a conceptual theme which manifests itself through the storied producer's use of deep and atmospheric chords, fluid and occasionally glistening electronics, and rhythms that evoke images of ever-deeper dives into the dark, cold depths.

Unieqav is the ninth solo studio album by German electronic artist Alva Noto. The record was released on 16 March 2018 via Noton label. This is also seen in the coverart for each, which, when combined, form a triptych spelling Uni. The music is more rhythmic and dancefloor-oriented. Noto explains that the compositions sonically represent an underwater dive.

Unfortunately, Alva Noto was having technical difficulties as well. Unieqav had made its world premiere in Turin only a few months before Mutek, but there were still a few kinks to be worked out. As patient attendees sipped whiskey cocktails, Nicolai and festival technicians troubleshot the live rig for 20 minutes, then 30, periodically glancing at the unresponsive screen that loomed over the laptop setup. The Unieqav album captures some of this live excitement and, following Unitxt and Univrs, completes Alva Noto’s Uni trilogy. The albums are a family.
