Portishead’s 1994 full-length debut Dummy received critical acclaim, winning the 1995 Mercury Music Prize. Although it achieved only modest chart success overseas, it peaked at number 2 on the UK Album Chart, and saw two of its three singles reach number 13. The album was certified gold in 1997 and has sold two million copies in Europe. The album was certified double platinum in the UK in 1996, for sales exceeding 600,000 copies. It had sold 825,000 copies in the United.
Album · 1994 · 11 Songs. You can see his point: a record as compellingly discomfiting as Dummy seems at odds with a movement that spawned multiple chill-out albums. Its noir, precisely layered sound-tranquilized hip-hop beats, haunted strings, and tortured guitar lines-is given soul by Beth Gibbons’s voice.
In the UK, a dummy isn’t just a mannequin or an idiot; it’s also what Americans would call a pacifier. Savor the irony in the title of Portishead’s debut album. But Dummy doesn’t coddle, it unsettles. It tastes not like warm milk but coppery and bitter, like blood. Despite its two-plus decades spent soundtracking makeout sessions, it cradles a terrible loneliness in its heart.
This album, released in 1994, has proven itself to be one of the pillars of the genre. The band, essentially, is t Geoff Barrow (the tape-op for Massive Attack when Blue Lines was made), and singer Beth Gibbons. This is an album steeped in hip-hop that features NO rapping whatsoever. All the instruments are recorded live, too, with the exception of the drums on It Could Be Sweet. So leave the prejudice at home.
