Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American jazz pianist and vocalist. He recorded over one hundred songs that became hits on the pop charts. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Cole also acted in films and on television and performed on Broadway. He was the first African American man to host an American television series.

And while it's not as packed with hits as the prior disc is ("Route 66," "Sweet Lorraine," "Straighten Up and Fly Right"), the second volume still contains a nonstop array of Cole's near-perfect singing and tasty piano work. Save for a few numbers where Oscar Moore plays, the majority of the material here features Cole's late-'40s support cast of guitarist Irving Ashby and bassist Johnny Miller. And nicely expanding the sound a bit, bongo player Jack Costanza sits in for a few cuts.

The King Cole Trio performed twice on CBS Radio's variety show The Orson Welles Almanac in 1944. According to legend, Cole's singing career did not start until a drunken barroom patron demanded that he sing "Sweet Lorraine". Cole said that this fabricated story "sounded good, so I just let it ride. On November 5, 1956, The Nat 'King' Cole Show debuted on NBC. The variety program was one of the first hosted by an African American, which created controversy at the time. Beginning as a 15-minute pops show on Monday night, the program was expanded to a half-hour in July 1957. The song and album won seven Grammy awards in 1992 for Best Album and Best Song.
