These were Cole's debut recordings. Originally recorded and released in sets of 78 . records between 1944–49, they were reissued in 1950 on 10-inch LPs. The original releases of Volume 3 (as 78 . record album) and Volume 4 (as 78 . m record album and as 45 . record box set) only contained 6 songs (3 records per set).

This album features Cole's first trio comprised of Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass. All of the tracks were recorded for Decca towards the end of 1940 and through 1941. While I personally prefer the slightly later trio that features Johnny Miller on bass, that is a personal preference and not a reflection of the configuration on this album. Indeed, the era in which these tracks were recorded was dominated by big band with some smaller ensembles like Louis Jordan starting to emerge

The King Cole Trio - and particularly the singer/pianist then known as "King Cole" - on the other hand, was going in exactly the opposite direction, as its success on records and at clubs and theaters around the country led to appearances in films and on radio. After numerous guest-star stints on Bing Crosby's Kraft Music Hall radio series, the trio, along with pianist Eddy Duchin, was hired to host the show's summer replacement program for 13 weeks beginning May 16, 1946.
