Arcangelo Corelli was among the first composers to ever write a "concerto grosso," an early form of concerto in which a group of concertino instruments is backed by an orchestra. Because Corelli kept tinkering with them for most of his life, the concerti grossi were published posthumously as his sixth Opus.
