I've held the position since I heard this album that this record might be one of the most underrated death metal albums of the entire 90's. It's actually subtly yet really importantly different from Sinister's earlier works, and all the better for it. Most of the dutch death metal scene prided itself on relying more on slower tempos, crushing riffs, and a deeply evocative atmosphere (among other qualities, of course - see Asphyx, who really was the archetypical band of that scene), but Sinister were a lot closer to the US styles of death metal then their peers.

Hate is Sinister’s ultimate statement, it is the band’s most conceptually complete, musically savage and their most technically refined album. This is the start of the second era of Sinister’s first period, and the first record to signal a major line-up change in terms of writing and overall construction.

This is Sinister's last good album and shows the band's first signs of weakness as riffs start to become less original than their earliest of releases. Even with this fact, "Hate" is still one hell of a solid album that should always be considered as being one of the best to come out of the osdm scene.
