Björk’s Vespertine, released in August 2001, may be the first (and last) album written for the Napster age. With her fifth studio release, and coming off the expansive, futuristic Homogenic, Björk set out to make an intimate album of micro-beats and minimalist production. It was the kind of production that would lose none of its force when downloaded from the file-sharing sites flourishing at the time. Björk, Alone in the Dark: I use micro-beats, a lot of whispery vocals, which I think sound amazing when they’re downloaded because of the secrecy of the medium.

Vespertine was an autobiographical concept album about an episode of intimacy in the singer's life. Yet the team of Jan Dvořák, Peter Häublein, and Roman Vinuesa who adapted Björk's music for the Orchestra of Nationaltheater Mannheim faced serious challenges.

Björk is the only studio album by Icelandic singer Björk Guðmundsdóttir as a child singer, released on 18 December 1977 by Fálkinn. In 1976, Björk appeared on Icelandic radio singing "I Love to Love" through the music school she attended, which led her to a record deal and the release, with the help of stepfather Sævar, of her first solo album in 1977.

And what's a Björk album without the ambush? That said, Vespertine has more than just a handful of charms. The record is gorgeously orchestrated with the Icelander's neon string sections, chiming music boxes, and intricately arranged background Björks. Hidden Place" opens Vespertine with a glitchy, almost lo-fi melodic loop, paired with the deep sub-bass attack that has dominated the low-end of Björk's music in recent years. Aurora" begins with rhythmic broomsweeps and awakens with delicate frosted chimes and angelic choirs.

A companion album to 2001's critically acclaimed Vespertine, Vespertine Live was originally released in the 5 disc Live Box set in 2003 and was later released separately on 1 June 2004 by One Little Indian records.
