Kerry Michael Chater is a Canadian musician and songwriter. He is best known as a member of Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, but he has been a successful Nashville songwriter for many years. Chater was born on August 7, 1945 in Vancouver, British Columbia. A bass player, in the mid-60s he joined a band called The Progressives with Doug Ingle (keyboards), Gary 'Mutha' Whitem (sax) and Danny Weis (guitar).

According to Gene Sculatti's liner notes in Real Gone's 2014 reissue of Part Time Love, Kerry Chater always wanted to be a writer - nothing more, nothing less. His songs are what landed him a deal with Warner Bros. and they're the foundation of his long career as a songwriter in Nashville, and the best that can be said of his 1977 debut is that it's very much a writer's record: a collection of songs designed to be big hits. That they weren't big hits in 1977 is neither the fault of Michael Omartian, who gives this record a lovely Los Angeles.

Kerry began his professional musical career in 1967 when he and his friend, Gary Puckett, formed the pop-rock band Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, and for the next four years Kerry was the group's bass player and arranger for the live performances.
