Listen to authentic Maastricht Carnival music, often with live performances. The De Momus cafe was named after the association that started the Maastricht Carnival. You can still find many signs of its rich history! In den Ouden Vogelstruys. Reputed to be the oldest cafe (1474) in Maastricht, this spot is also referred to as "the living room of Maastricht". During Carnival, the cafe is decorated with portraits of various former Carnival princes and, of course, a portrait of the new Prince Carnival. See the famous bronze statue "The spirit of Maastricht" at the lively Mestreechter Geis cafe. Traditionally, during an evening in the run-up to Carnival, a parody is enacted here focusing on the selection of the prince, the handing over of the key, the Carnival celebration and the traditional final herring snack.

Maastricht is the ultimate carnival city of the Netherlands. Carnival in Maastricht, or the way they say it in the Maastricht dialect ‘Vastelaovend in Mestreech’, takes place in February and attracts a large number of visitors every year from Limburg and other parts of the Netherlands. The entire city centre is decorated during carnival with garlands and lighting in the traditional colours red, yellow and green. The so-called street carnival is a combination of Rijnland carnival and Burgundian carnival with a number of unique elements, such as the ‘Bónte Störm-parade’ and the street carnival with dozens of ‘Zate Hermeniekes’. Stay at Dormio Resort Maastricht during carnival 2017 Stay overnight in one of the luxurious holiday homes at Dormio Resort Maastricht and experience the special Maastricht carnival during one or multiple days.

Carnival of Maastricht. Carnival in the Netherlands is most celebrated in traditionally Catholic regions. There are two main variations of Dutch Carnival: the Rhenish Carnival in the province of Limburg and the Burgundian Carnival in the province of North Brabant. It incorporates some elements of the Carnival of Venice. Dutch Carnival usually starts on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday and culminates on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras). It is one of the oldest Carnival celebrations in Europe. The three-day celebration includes a huge parade with beautifully decorated floats, street parties, performances, marching bands, dancing and more.
Intentionally amateurish marching bands traditionally perform on the streets. Dutch Carnival is officially celebrated on the Sunday through Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday. Photo Taken On: February 22nd, 2009. dutch carnival, marching bands, elaborate costumes
