Thought for Food was released on October 22, 2002. Praised by critics for its distinctive sound, it featured extensive sampling from obscure sources coupled with mostly acoustic instrumentation. 2002–2003: The Lemon of Pink. Shortly after the release of Thought for Food, the band relocated to North Adams, Massachusetts, near where Zammuto had graduated from Williams College in 1999, studying chemistry and visual arts. Zammuto and de Jong began the recording of The Lemon of Pink around this time. The Books began working on The Way Out in late 2008. Zammuto spoke of the album's New Age themes in an interview in April 2009, saying they took samples from self-help and hypnotherapy cassettes.

The Books' first album, THOUGHT FOR FOOD, sees them already blending their cut-up method with folksy strummings, as on "Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again," making the melody more uneasy with vocal snippets. But that's not the only trick up their sleeves: "All Bad Ends All" has a swinging feel, while the slow build of "All Our Base Are Belong To Them" ends in a banjo free-for-all boosted by some hushed vocals

Thought for Food is going to sit comfortably in my collection in its own little category, a small world unto itself. Despite Thought for Food's unique sound, the record, on one level, is not hard to pin down. The musical elements are so simple and commonplace that describing them is not a problem. What's difficult is conveying how these few everyday pieces are placed together so artfully to create something this striking and unique. While the rule of thumb for music with a collage approach has always been to stuff the samples into every nook and cranny, The Books let all the sounds breathe. In addition to the folky guitar, strings and the voice samples, silence is really the fourth primary instrument. Another great thing about the record is the way the samples, though they at first seem random, manage to tell a story.

The Books' method is relatively simple: Zammuto and de Jong combine guitar, violin, and the occasional banjo or cello with sounds from their extensive sample libraries. The input seems almost banal, but the music on Thought for Food is anything but. The Books have an uncanny knack for spinning straw into gold, transforming basic instrumental parts into deeply affecting compositions. Particularly noteworthy is their skill in weaving odd snippets into the fabric of the music.

Sadly, the album seems to have no sense of when it isn't welcome anymore and ends well before I wanted it to on a song that hardly works as a fitting last song for an album this magical. 49 people found this helpful.
