Western music is a form of country and hillbilly music composed by and about the people who settled and worked throughout the Western United States and Western Canada. Western music celebrates the life of the cowboy on the open ranges, Rocky Mountains, and prairies of Western North America.
Selected here are ten songs and ballads that reflect the richness and adversity of those who ventured into the region, as it was being settled. The Cattle Call as performed by Lee Ann Rimes and Eddy Arnold in 1996. The twenties and especially the thirties produced a series of singing and yodeling cowboys, including Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Of the Big Three, perhaps, Rogers gained the most fame and his extraordinary yodeling skill may have had something to do with that. What follows is a different and perhaps more authentic night herding song, which was first recorded by Rambling Jack Elliot, and sung live here by Colter Wall. Nonetheless, the song is not so polished and the yodeling is rather basic. The Night Herding Song.
Western and Cowboy Songs. Although it is often spoken of in the same breath as "Country" music, "Western" is a distinct area of American popular music whose roots reach into the frontier era of the 19th century. Though cowboys no longer rode the Chisholm Trail north, there was still plenty of work with cattle to be had on ranches and in rodeos, and in songs, drama, popular fiction and movies, the cowboy had fully emerged as an authentic and truly American hero, a kind of knight of the plains.
