Aspera Hiems Symfonia (Latin for "Harsh Winter's Symphony") is the debut studio album by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. Aspera is the only black metal album Arcturus released, though it still contains many of the experimental elements that would be expanded upon on their following albums, which saw the band shift permanently into the genres of avant-garde and progressive metal.

Arcturus Aspera Hiems Symfonia The album title is Latin for "Harsh Winter Symphony". Songs 2, 4, 6, & 8 are re-recorded versions of songs originally found on the Constellation 1994 EP. The first pressing of the digipak omits track 8 on the back cover and has unexplained asterisks behind the song titles of tracks 4 & 5.

Aspera Hiems Symfonia" is a cult Black Metal album. The majority of dark and macabre music for music fans is Black Metal. But this Norwegian band Arcturus is one of those bands that make Black Metal an intellectual type of music, because of the highly inspired musicians that form the band, the one that shines the most being Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg, also singer of Norwegian band Ulver. Usually these albums aren't that great, some are dull and uninspired. But this is not the case, as a matter of fact, this is a really enjoyable album. But it definitely isn't an album that gives you the chills, or makes you feel depressed.

A graceful mixture of classical majesty and black-metal brooding and aggression, Aspera is a powerhouse album chock full of charged riffs, sinister chants and howls, and some wonderfully foreboding atmospheres. Wintry Grey" is a metal tune worthy of the Clockwork Orange soundtrack.
