Viva Saturn relocated to San Francisco and shifted its sound from dreamy atmospherics to ed guitar pop. They took a textured guitar approach with singer Steven and ex-Rain Parade members Matt Piucci and John Thoman on guitar. A shifting rhythm section included Billy Blaze and Continental Drifter Carlo Nuccio on drums and Ross Inden, Kurt Kummerfelt and Gary Eaton on bass. The final Viva Saturn album, Ships of Heaven, was delivered to Restless Records in fall of 1998, but the label had no scheduled release plans
Formed from the ashes of Paisley Underground staple, Rain Parade, Viva Saturn's psychedelic pop is reminiscent of the Velvet Underground, Television and Big Star combined. In the tradition of these bands, Viva Saturn's second full-length, Brightside, flows seamlessly from jangly pop tunes to melancholy dissonance. Steven Roback's detached, nasal twang blends nicely into an atmospheric backdrop of textured guitars, piano accents and feedback. Stand-out tracks range from "Here Comes April," a bright melodic pop song, to the moody, desolate.
Viva Saturn was a rock group from Los Angeles, California founded by former members of Rain Parade. Los Angeles, California, United States.
