With the departure of Marty Balin and Grace Slick, Paul Kantner remained the sole remaining mainstay of the original Jefferson Airplane. Without Balin's romantic songwriting and charismatic stage presence and Slick's sardonic wit and sense of drama, not to mention their highly distinctive vocals, the band was forced to develop a new personality. After wrapping up the new album material, they conclude the East Coast celebration with "Light The Sky On Fire," a relatively rare song, featured in a "Star Wars" holiday special and as the b-side of the "Hyperdrive" single, followed by the high energy Spitfire track, "Dance With The Dragon" to close the early show.

Their follow up album, 1975's Red Octopus had even greater success. Marty Balin, who had contributed and sung the ballad "Caroline" on the previous album, officially returned to the Jefferson fold as a full-time member in January 1975 and stayed with the group for nearly the remainder of the decade. It was released as a promotional tie-in to the special (backed with "Hyperdrive" from Dragon Fly), and was also included as.

Released in 1976, a year after the chart-topping Red Octopus, it quickly scaled the charts, peaking for six consecutive weeks at in Billboard and attaining a RIAA platinum certification. The album features writing contributions from members of singer Marty Balin's former band Bodacious DF, as well as Jesse Barish, who became one of Balin's frequent collaborators. Stereo and quadraphonic mixes of the album were released

In retrospect, the band’s newly penned ‘Light the Sky on Fire’ (later featured on their 1979 ‘Gold‘ best-of set), came off as an absolute highlight of the doomed special. Still, today, one can’t help but snicker at the cutting edge holographic visual effects that bathe the band’s performance with blinding splashes of pink-and-purple neon

Vanish without a traceand we'll see God then. Temples and mirrors interest me. Though all there really is to know. Will you light the sky on fire? Will you light the sky on fire again tonight? You can take me higher than the diamonds in the sky. Take me, we'll vanish without a trace. And then we'll all see God then. On the pyramids of the legend. The great god Kopa Khan came.
