The album opens with energetic bursts of warbling, dissonant blares, and simple, loose snare beats that taper out, then return with renewed fervor, the decision made that "yes, this is how we want to rock. Offsetting this, the next piece is rather quiet and secretive. Generally sounding more like a drunken choir, this instrumental group gets almost bluesy in a klezmer/avant-jazz kind of way. Coleman fans will dig it, as he has some fine organ moments throughout.

Anthony Coleman means to be controversial, to stand out by calling his group Selfhaters, and this alone makes the project worthy. Its all the more rewarding that the music stands out as well. Coleman's got a great sense of musical timing. Listen to any of the tracks and you can hear his keen sense of rhythm and groove allowing the "noise" elements to be musical and not just texture time and time again. The album itself comes from a number of different sessions, not all of equal strength, there are a couple of tracks that seem like add-ons, curiousities if you will.
