Ballet Folklórico de México performed in Chicago’s Wrigley Field during the opening ceremonies of the 1959 Pan American Games. The Mexican government subsequently named Hernández’s growing troupe the resident dance company of Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Arts, where the company can still be seen today. 4. Hernandez was born in Mexico City, the daughter of wealthy politician Lamberto Hernandez and Ava Navarro. Amalia joined Mexico’s National School of Dance at 17 before dropping out to get married and start a family.

Amalia Hernandez, the founder of the internationally successful Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, died on Saturday in Mexico City. She was 83. Ms. Hernandez, a specialist in Mexican folk dance, created programs that resembled fiestas, notable for eye-catching choreography and colorful costumes. Her work included ensembles based on regional dances, hypothetical reconstructions of Aztec and Mayan ceremonies, scenes from Mexican history and evocations of village festivals.
