Rod Stewart and the Great American Songbook? Why, that would be like like mixing apples and oranges. Actually, when I heard this CD I was pleasantly surprised. Rod Stewart does quite a respectable job with these classics, and there is warmth around the rough edges of his voice that really seems to work well with these classics. My first impression was that this album was more soporific than anything, but it has grown on me. I would never, ever claim that Rod's version of any of these songs is the definitive version of the song, or that the arrangements grab you by the throat, but it IS nice to listen to, more as background music than anything. I guess, if you really want to get precise, you could say this music is more about mood than about emotion.
