Promised Land or Bust is Moreland & Arbuckle's Alligator Records debut. The Kansas bluesmen re-enlisted producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, the Sword) - who also helmed their brilliant 7 Cities in 2013. The Kansas bluesmen claim Alligator was a natural fit, since their first signing was Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers, an enormous influence on their sound.
The Moreland & Arbuckle journey began when the two met at an open-mic jam at a club in Wichita, Kansas, in 2001. Moreland had just moved into town a few months earlier from Emporia – a city located some eighty-five miles to the northeast. A guitarist since age 15, his source material was admittedly diverse – Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Black Sabbath, Charley Patton, Motley Crue – but he’d settled into traditional blues by the time he’d arrived in Wichita in his mid-20s.
Moreland & Arbuckle’s Alligator debut is as deep as delta blues and heavy as thundering rock, as the band continues to wring hard-hitting, modern roots music from traditional forms. Groove-friendly guitar spiced with sledgehammer riffs duels with raucous singing and harp playing, and both barely held in place by propulsive drumming. Even when the throttle is pulled back for a loping folk-tinged ballad or a noir-ish blues worthy of Tom Waits, the band’s intensity and raw emotion shine through. According to Moreland, The new album is consciously traditional but still has the signature drive and power that we have crafted over the past thirteen years. Moreland says signing with Alligator is a perfect fit. One of our biggest influences ever, Hound Dog Taylor, was the very first Alligator artist.
Luckily, that is still the case today. We started touring regularly in 2006 and since then we have literally seen the world. Having played 20 countries on 3 different continents is something neither one of us ever imagined would transpire for these small town Kansas kids. We've been invited to play some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world. In 2008, we had the privilege to play for the troops serving our country in Iraq and Kuwait. We are not 100% sure when we will be releasing this album. But based on our highly advanced musical algorithm ;-), we predict rewards completion by March of 2016 at the VERY latest. As stated, the album is complete.
Guitarist Aaron Moreland – co-founder of the groundbreaking Kansas-based trio Moreland & Arbuckle - describes their music as gritty blues and roots rock from the heartland. Moreland, along with Dustin Arbuckle and drummer Kendall Newby, electrify raw Delta and Mississippi Hill Country blues, folk, and traditional country with unrelenting punk rock energy washed in hard-hitting Southern soul. Their songs are expertly executed with musical muscle and fifth-gear urgency.
