The first album in the set, "Roger McGuinn," made a very strong statement. The material was outstanding, blending folk and rock jazz, and country themes. Guest performers included former Byrds Gene Clark, David Crosby and Chris Hillman, along with Bruce Johnston, Spanky McFarlane and many others. Peace on You" was album number two, and again featured a very strong song mix. Entry number three was "Roger McGuinn and Band," featuring Roger fronting a very strong and tight rock and roll band, but it was a little thin on new material

Featuring Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and ex-Byrds David Crosby and Chris Hillman, the resultant album had a strangely modern feel, although it was primarily driven by McGuinn's trademark Rickenbacker 12-string. Songwriting had never been McGuinn's strong suit, and on this album he wisely chose some excellent material by Jules Shear and Tom Petty, who provided the album's unexpected hit, "King of the Hill.
McGuinn originally conceived the album as a blend of rock, jazz, folk and other styles; but Gram Parsons's and Chris Hillman's untry influences came to the forefront. After the break-up of the Byrds, McGuinn released several solo albums throughout the 1970s. In 1987 Roger McGuinn was the opening act for Dylan and Tom Petty. In 1991, he released his comeback solo album, Back from Rio, to successful acclaim. It included the hit single "King of the Hill," written together with, and featuring, Petty.

Not so rolling thunderous applause this time. Record Collector is the world's leading authority on rare and collectable records. Send it to ti. onesopolis. Roger McGuinn - Roger McGuinn & Band/ Cardiff Rose. Not so rolling thunderous applause this time. Roger McGuinn is undoubtedly one of the key figures in 60s music, but he has also made some dire career moves. 1975’s Roger McGuinn & Band was one of them. It’s a blandly generic middlin’ rock album on which he’s backed by journeymen musicians. The less said about it, the better. 1976’s Cardiff Rose, while not an outright classic, is a great improvement.
