Back from Rio is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of The Byrds Roger McGuinn. It was released in January 1991, more than a decade after McGuinn's previous solo album, Thunderbyrd. The album was issued following the release of the Byrds box set and musically it leans on the sound of The Byrds thanks to McGuinn's ringing 12-string electric guitar and vocal contributions from ex-Byrds members David Crosby and Chris Hillman

The first album in the set, "Roger McGuinn," made a very strong statement. The material was outstanding, blending folk and rock jazz, and country themes. Guest performers included former Byrds Gene Clark, David Crosby and Chris Hillman, along with Bruce Johnston, Spanky McFarlane and many others. If you are not familiar with McGuinn's sixth album, Back from Rio (1991), make sure to check it out - I consider it his best. Also, if interested, Windows Media Player correctly identifies all songs and lists most (but not all) song composers.
After spending the better part of the 1980s as a solo acoustic troubadour, Byrds cofounder Roger McGuinn landed a contract for a solo album with Arista Records at the turn of the 1990s. Featuring Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and ex-Byrds David Crosby and Chris Hillman, the resultant album had a strangely modern feel, although it was primarily driven by McGuinn's trademark Rickenbacker 12-string.

MASTERPIECE As a true fan of Byrds-music I was often a little disappointed with the solo efforts of Roger McGuinn, because the musicians who played on his albums did not always seem to understand where he comes from, or they didn’t tune in to his music. This album is the exception: the chemistry works really well here, having such helpers as Tom Petty, Elvis Costello and Dave Stewart on his side. Superb production combines with jangling guitar work, majestic vocal harmonies and a well chosen. Connect to this site.

I had the pleasure of being in Roger's touring band on a couple of tours in support of his "Back From Rio" album. I played guitar and sang harmonies for him, which I enjoyed greatly. Roger has a singing style that for me, was very easy and natural to get in synch with.
