Solo: Kathryn Stott Soloist. Dvorák’s own practice of arranging existing works has encouraged Christian Poltéra to select a number of the composer’s violin pieces and songs, performing them here in his own transcriptions. These include the Violin Sonatina, from the same time as the Rondo and Silent Woods and originally intended for Dvorák’s own children.
Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular chamber music partners and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank Martin. Composer: Antonín Dvorák Performer: Christian Poltera, Kathryn Stott. 68/B 133: no 5, Silent Woods by Antonín Dvorák Performer: Christian Poltera (Cello), Kathryn Stott (Piano) Period: Romantic Written: Bohemia. Larghetto Antonín Dvořák; Christian Poltéra; Christian Poltéra; Kathryn Stott. Molto vivace Antonín Dvořák; Christian Poltéra; Christian Poltéra; Kathryn Stott. 4. IV. Finale (the Sonatina) works particularly well in its new baritone and tenor register. this attests to both the sensitive way in which Poltéra has adapted the music to the cello medium and to the deft and affectionate manner in which he plays it. So natural does the Sonatina sound on the cello that you wonder why Dvořák himself never thought of doing i. - Gramophone. Young Swiss cellist Christian Poltéra and his chamber music partner, pianist Kathryn Stott, illuminate Dvořák’s long path to his famous cello concerto on this 2012 release
Antonín Dvorák famously complained about the sound of the cello, but if he had heard this album by Swiss-born cellist Christian Poltéra and his wonderfully sympathetic British accompanist Kathryn Stott, he might have written more for the instrument. Most of the music here was transcribed for cello and piano by Poltéra himself, with a couple of small Dvorák originals and two transcriptions by the composer rounding out the program

Silent Woods was arranged by the composer himself from the original version for piano four hands; in fact, the only compositions originally written for cello here are the Rondo in G Minor and the Polonaise in A. It seems extraordinary now to think that Dvořák wasn’t immediately enamoured of the cello’s sound, finding it nasal in the upper register and grumbling in the lower, as the booklet notes recall. The opening Sonatina in G, originally for violin and piano and dedicated to Dvořák’s children, is all brightness shot through with pentatonic flavours; Poltéra and Stott animate the music with the perfect balance of poise and exuberance. And if, in the following Rondo in G, the players seem for the most part simply to be letting their hair down, the emotional intensity returns with a vengeance in Silent Woods.
