The Horn Trio in E♭ major, Op. 40, by Johannes Brahms is a chamber piece in four movements written for natural horn, violin, and piano. Composed in 1865, the work commemorates the death of Brahms's mother, Christiane, earlier that year. However, it draws on a theme which Brahms had composed twelve years previously but did not publish at the time. The work was first performed in Zurich on November 28, 1865, and was published a year later in November 1866.

The Piano Trio in A major, sometimes attributed to Johannes Brahms as Anh. 4/5, is scored for piano, violin and cello. Brahms is reported to have destroyed many of his works that did not meet his own high standards. This piano trio may be one of the exceptions to have escaped the flames. The trio first came to light in 1924 when it was discovered amongst papers musicologist Ernst Bücken had inherited from the Bonn-based musical collector Erich Preiger.

As a piano trio, the work is notably enormous in scope and sound. Reflecting in its two versions both early and mature Brahms, it is a virtual blueprint of the composer's stylistic development. 8; Dvorák: Piano Trio in E Minor "Dumky", Op. 90. Dorian. Beethoven, Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 1 No. 3 October. Johannes Brahms (1933-1897) had spent the summer of 1886 composing in a particularly idyllic setting beside Lake Thun (Switzerland), which was a change from his usual beautiful summer retreat of Prtschach by the Wrthersee. However, idyllic is hardly the word we would use to describe the first movement of the very terse C Minor Trio.
