Best known as Erskine Hawkins' altoist from 1944-60 and for penning the Hawkins hit "Tippin' In," Bobby Smith led a fine series of recordings for the United label during 1949-54. This 1996 CD has his 22 selections (seven previously unreleased), which range in style from Johnny Hodges-type jump swing to early R&B, blues and ballads.
Robert "Bobby" Smith (sometimes spelled Bobbie; April 10, 1936 – March 16, 2013) was an American R&B singer notable as the principal lead singer of the classic Motown/Philly group, The Spinners, (also known as the Detroit Spinners or the Motown Spinners), throughout its history. The group had their first record deal when they signed with Tri-Phi Records in early 1961.
In addition he made a number of recordings of his own and these have become sought after rarities in their own right. This album is well worth attention and it fills a nice gap in the market, we have covered all facets of his career on this album and we have included in this package a fully illustrated booklet complete with sleeve notes from R&B expert, Dave Penny. 40% OFF.
