José Serebrier Conductor. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. José Serebrier Conductor. Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Author: Peter Dickinson. Rorem Flute Concerto; Violin Concerto. Ned Rorem’s position in the CD catalogue has improved recently thanks to José Serebrier. On a previous Naxos release (10/03) he celebrated Rorem’s 80th birthday with all three symphonies, dating from the 1950s – inexplicably they had hardly been performed in the intervening period. Their expansive scope contradicts the image of Rorem as a song specialist, although his 300 songs are widely admired.

Rorem's flute concerto opens with a melody above blows from the timpani. Shades of the last movement of Mahler 10? The booklet informs us the ffffff seven-note clusters perhaps mean Fate. Jeffrey Khaner is the concerto's dedicatee and his playing is stunning, with wide dynamic range and colour. There's nothing outwardly flashy in Rorem's writing and I liked the way Khaner floats long lines so naturally. But sample the The Stone Tower or the brief False Waltz if you want to hear dazzling pyrotechnics.
Concerto pour violon - Pilgrims - Concerto pour flûte, Philippe Quint, violon - Jeffrey Khaner, flûte - Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - José Serebrier, direction. The Violin Concerto is from 1985 and has previously been recorded by Gidon Kremer, a recording I have not heard. Rather more expressionistic that the Flute Concerto, it too is a six-movement suite rather than a classic concerto. Phillippe Quint, whose recording of William Schuman's violin concerto I quite liked, is a marvelous advocate for this virtuosic work. Still, I am less struck by this concerto than the Flute Concerto, which I feel confident will enter the repertoire.
Flute Concerto; Violin Concerto; Pilgrims Jeffrey Khaner, flute; Philippe Quint, violin; Jos Serebrier conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Naxos). Three effusively lyrical movements are appealing: The Romance Without Words begins wistfully and blossoms ardently. The 2002 Flute Concerto, in six overtly pictorial movements, doesn’t sound in any way ungrateful or difficult, but, especially in the discursive opening sections, it’s hard to make out a clear structure or purpose. Most attractive are Sirens, alternating Ravelian rippling figures with a questing flute theme, and False Waltz, whose irregular running figures climax in a vaguely circusy French waltz.
